Theodosius’s Disc
In the footsteps of a great Roman treasure
We invite you to experience an exciting adventure, following in the footsteps of a highly valuable Roman treasure.
We are referring to the famous Theodosius Disc, considered the most impressive surviving piece of Roman silverware, probably a gift from Emperor Theodosius to the governor of Hispania. Probably made in Constantinople to commemorate the decennary or fortnightly anniversary of the reign of the Roman Emperor Theodosius I the Great, it is one of the finest examples of Late Antique imperial goldsmithing and imagery, dating back to 380 AD.
A unique piece that was discovered by chance in 1847 on a Roman road on the outskirts of Almendralejo, in what is now a beautiful vineyard landscape that you can explore in a very original way aboard a carriage.
You can also visit the Monsalud Palace in Almendralejo to see with your own eyes an extraordinary replica that is undoubtedly the finest silver jewel from the late Roman period and an archaeological document of exceptional value.
The carriage tour ends at a renowned artisan cava and wine winery where a wine is made in honor of this important discovery:
“Theod osivs,” which you will be lucky enough to taste. Taste it alongside a cava from the same winery.
Come to the Ribera del Guadiana Wine Route for authentic Roman wine tourism.
